Excitement Builds as IPL Teams Prepare for Crucial Retention Deadline
Cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the upcoming IPL retention deadline on October 31st, 5:00 PM IST. As the teams finalize their lists of retained players for the 2025 season, the anticipation is palpable among loyal fans.
Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan has also been left wondering about the fate of certain high-profile players, particularly Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. According to reports, Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title last season, may not be retained by the franchise. Pathan expressed his hope that Delhi Capitals would work to keep hold of their dynamic wicket-keeper batter Pant, whose potential as both a player and captain, coupled with his immense market value, make him a valuable asset.

The IPL retention rules stipulate that each franchise can retain a maximum of six players, with a cap of five capped international, Indian or overseas players, and two uncapped Indian players. For the first player retained, a team will lose ₹18 crore from their purse, ₹14 crore for the second, ₹11 crore for the third, ₹18 crore for the fourth, and ₹14 crore for the fifth. Uncapped Indian players retained will cost a team ₹4 crore each.
With a 20% increase in the team purse to ₹120 crore, the franchises will have their work cut out as they aim to assemble a formidable squad for the 2024 IPL season. The retention deadline has left fans, experts, and former players like Irfan Pathan in a state of anticipation, as they eagerly await the unveiling of the final retention lists.
