Australia’s Cameron Green Ready to Bat Across the Order at T20 World Cup

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green is ready to bat up and down the order at the upcoming T20 World Cup, after experiencing various roles during his stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The right-hander initially struggled when batting at number three for RCB, but thrived when he was shifted to the middle order after being dropped for a few games. Green’s versatility could prove valuable for Australia, whose batting lineup is already well-set for the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States and West Indies. The 23-year-old may also be called upon to fill in while captain and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh recovers from a hamstring strain.

“That’s the beauty of what I’ve been exposed to in the last few years,” Green said in Barbados, where Australia is preparing for their tournament opener against Oman. “It’s not always been a consistent spot that I’ve locked into. But at the same time, I’m also thankful for that. I feel like I can jump in at many different roles. I think that’s where I see myself this tournament, maybe plugging holes in the team.”

Green is not the only Australian player to benefit from their IPL experience. Fast bowler Pat Cummins, who captained Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL final, said his T20 bowling was probably the best it has been in the last 10 years. Cummins believes the constant match practice during the IPL helped him sharpen his skills in the format.

“We played 17 games straight,” Cummins told Cricket Australia’s website. “For the most part, international T20s are after the test series, and you’ve got to try and hit a yorker or a slower ball, and then go back to a test series. So just getting the pace of the game and executing some of those balls that you need more in T20 cricket than in other formats, I feel really well placed.”

Reigning Test and ODI world champions Australia are aiming to become the first team to hold all three of cricket’s major global trophies by winning the T20 World Cup.
