Brisbane Heat teen Lucy Hamilton makes WBBL history with five-wicket haul

Brisbane Heat 139/4 (Rodrigues 45, Knott 33*) beat Melbourne Stars 138 (Garth 31*, Hamilton 5-8) by 6 wickets

In a remarkable WBBL performance, Brisbane Heat teenager Lucy Hamilton became the youngest player to take a five-wicket haul, skipping schoolies celebrations to lead her side to a crucial 6-wicket victory over the Melbourne Stars.

The 18-year-old left-arm quick, who was finishing her exams in Bundaberg while her school friends partied on the Gold Coast, made an instant impact, dismissing Annabel Sutherland and Yastika Bhatia in her opening over. She then removed Meg Lanning, Tess Flintoff and Deepti Sharma to finish with stunning figures of 5-8, the second-best bowling performance in WBBL history.

“All my mates are at schoolies at the moment, on the Goldy living it up,” said a delighted Hamilton. “Going out there today I was just trying to back myself. Getting my first wicket and getting 5-fa, all the girls were getting around me. It was really exciting.”

Despite late resistance from Kim Garth and Maisy Gibson, the Stars’ total of 138 proved insufficient as Brisbane Heat’s batters, led by Jemimah Rodrigues’ 45 and Charlie Knott’s unbeaten 33, chased down the target with 15 balls to spare.

The win moved the Heat back up to third on the ladder, while the Stars’ season is now in jeopardy with just two wins from seven matches.

The promising youngster, who is part of Australia’s Under-19 side, will soon be making the move to Brisbane after commuting from Bundaberg for her WBBL commitments. With this career-defining performance, Hamilton has firmly established herself as a rising star in Australian cricket.
