Birmingham Phoenix Triumph in Homecoming Clash, Ellyse Perry Shines with 3 Wickets
Birmingham, 03 Aug 2024 – In a thrilling encounter at Edgbaston, the Birmingham Phoenix secured their second consecutive victory in the ongoing cricket season, defeating the Southern Brave by 16 runs. Inspired by the leadership of captain Ellyse Perry, the Phoenix overcame a slow start to post a competitive total of 137 for 7, before their bowling attack dismantled the Brave’s innings.
Winning the toss, the Southern Brave elected to field first, hoping to restrict the home team. Despite the early loss of Sophie Devine, Amy Jones steadied the innings with a well-crafted half-century. The Phoenix found an unlikely hero in Emily Arlott, whose cameo of 22 runs off just 12 deliveries, including two sixes, provided the much-needed impetus in the latter stages of the innings.
The Phoenix’s bowling attack, led by the ever-reliable Ellyse Perry, was simply too good for the Brave. The Australian legend ripped through the top order, dismissing the dangerous Smriti Mandhana, Maia Bouchier, and Georgia Adams in quick succession. Danni Wyatt put up a valiant effort with a 43-run knock, but the Brave struggled to keep up with the climbing run rate as the Phoenix bowlers maintained their discipline.
“Emily Arlott’s innings was the difference, clearing the fence with ease,” remarked Jones after the match. “And Pez’s start was unbelievable. When you have someone like that, who can deliver such performances, it is a huge lift for the team. We were really good in the field and backed up the bowlers.”
The victory at their home ground marked a significant turnaround for the Birmingham Phoenix, who had previously endured a 12-game losing streak. With Ellyse Perry leading the way, the team appears to have regained their form and will be looking to build on this momentum as the season progresses.
