Australian Allrounder Daniel Sams Ruled Out of T20 Blast with Knee Injury, Essex Sign Eathan Bosch as Replacement

July 4, 2024 – Essex have brought in South African allrounder Eathan Bosch to fill the void left by the injured Australian Daniel Sams for the second half of their Vitality T20 Blast campaign. Sams, who was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2023 as Essex reached the finals, suffered a knee injury during a match against Sussex in the first round of group games.

The injury will require surgery, forcing Sams to return home to Australia for a recovery period that could last between four to six months. This potentially jeopardizes his availability for the upcoming 2024-25 Big Bash League season back in his home country.

“It’s been great [to come back here],” Sams said about his time at Chelmsford. “My wife and I really enjoy coming back here, and we’ve made some really good friends with the guys and their partners.” However, the 26-year-old acknowledged that “it is what it is” and that he will have to focus on his rehabilitation process.

Prior to his injury, Sams had taken seven wickets in six appearances this season, proving to be a crucial factor in Essex’s run to the Finals Day last summer. The team currently sits fourth in the South Group with five wins from eight games.

To fill Sams’ void, Essex have signed the 26-year-old Eathan Bosch, who was earlier brought in for four County Championship games and has so far picked up eight wickets at an average of 24.12. Bosch, a former South Africa Under-19 representative, has also gained experience playing in the domestic SA20 league for the Pretoria Capitals.

Essex will be back in action when they host the defending champions, Somerset, at Chelmsford on Friday night.
