Former England Women’s Assistant Joins Birmingham Phoenix Coaching Staff as Head Coach
Birmingham Phoenix has announced the appointment of Ali Maiden as the new head coach of their women’s team for the 2025 Hundred season. Maiden takes over the role from Ben Sawyer, whose contract was not renewed after four successful years at the helm.
Maiden, a World Cup winner as an assistant coach with the England Women’s national team in 2017, was part of the coaching staff for London Spirit’s women’s Hundred title triumph this past summer. He was recently named the new head coach of the Bears Women’s team in August, having previously served as the batting coach at Yorkshire.
“Ali arrives at the Phoenix with vast experience in the women’s game, both internationally and in franchise cricket,” said Craig Flindall, Birmingham Phoenix’s general manager. “He was selected as the new Bears Women head coach following a rigorous selection process, so we know he is a high-caliber appointment.”
Flindall also emphasized that 2025 will be a transitional year for the Phoenix, with new investors expected to come on board the following year. He expressed confidence that Maiden’s leadership will help the team navigate this period as they look to challenge for top honors once again.
“I’m very grateful for everything Ben has done during his five years with Phoenix Women, and everyone here wishes him all the very best for the future,” Flindall added.
The club also confirmed that Dan Vettori will continue in his role as the head coach of the Birmingham Phoenix men’s team for the 2025 season.
