Aiden Markram Reflects on His Early Captaincy Lessons and Evolving Role as South Africa’s T20 Leader
In early 2018, a young Aiden Markram was thrust into the South African captaincy amidst a spate of injuries to senior players. The shy, reserved batter found himself leading the team against a formidable India side, ultimately losing the ODI series. This early captaincy stint led some to question whether the role was a good fit for the introverted Markram.
However, six years later, the 28-year-old has now led his SA20 side to a title and is set to captain South Africa at the upcoming T20 World Cup. Reflecting on that initial captaincy experience, Markram sees it as a “fantastic” learning opportunity rather than a chastening one.
“No, never,” Markram said when asked if he regretted the early captaincy. “I’d never regret taking captaincy for your national team. At the moment it was obviously not the best series for us as a team, but if you look at it in hindsight, that’s why I’m grateful, because I was able to learn.”
One of the key lessons Markram took away was the need to separate his batting and captaincy roles.
“Back then I was quite young, so [not] being able to tell the difference between being a batter and a captain. So, when you’re a batter, you’re just a batter for the team. You can’t captain in any way while you’re batting. So that was one massive learning.”
Markram has since repurposed himself into a versatile middle-order batter in limited-overs cricket, able to adapt to the match situation. This, combined with the explosive hitting of teammate Heinrich Klaasen, has made South Africa one of the favorites heading into the T20 World Cup, despite their historical struggles to win a major ICC trophy.
As captain, Markram is not seeking to make bold proclamations or drastic changes. He is simply focused on keeping his batting and captaincy roles distinct, allowing his team’s talent and hunger to shine through.
“Guys are definitely really hungry to get that first one,” Markram said, referring to South Africa’s quest for an elusive ICC trophy win.
