In a thrilling encounter at Providence, Guyana, Afghanistan showcased their prowess by securing an impressive 84-run victory over New Zealand in the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup. The resounding win has propelled Rashid Khan’s team to the top of Group C, further cementing their qualification aspirations for the Super Eight stage.
Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s scintillating 80-run innings off 56 deliveries laid the foundation for Afghanistan’s formidable total of 159 for 6. Gurbaz’s century stand with Ibrahim Zadran, who contributed 44 runs, proved to be the backbone of the Afghan innings.
“It is one of the greatest performances for us in T20s against a big team like New Zealand,” an elated Rashid Khan remarked, reflecting on his team’s historic triumph over the Black Caps.
The Afghan bowling attack then showcased their prowess, with left-armer Fazalhaq Farooqi and wrist-spinner Rashid Khan each taking four wickets apiece. Their clinical bowling display left New Zealand in disarray, as the former semi-finalists were bowled out for a mere 75 runs.
“They simply outplayed us in all facets,” admitted a dejected Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, acknowledging his team’s comprehensive defeat.
Elsewhere, Bangladesh kicked off their tournament campaign with a tense two-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in a low-scoring thriller in Dallas. Despite Sri Lanka setting a modest target of 125 runs, the match took several twists and turns before Bangladesh emerged victorious, thanks to a clutch six from Mahmudullah in the penultimate over.
