Promising Afghan Batter Ihsanullah Janat Banned for Five Years Due to Corruption Charges

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has handed a five-year ban to top-order batter Ihsanullah Janat for corruption charges related to the 2024 edition of the Kabul Premier League, a domestic T20 tournament.

According to the ACB’s statement, Janat, who has represented Afghanistan in 20 international matches across all three formats, was found guilty of violating Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, which involves “improper influence or efforts to fix the result, progress, conduct, or any other aspect of a match.” The 26-year-old has admitted to the charges and confessed to his involvement in corrupt activities.

“The ban, which is effective immediately, comes as a result of an ACB anti-corruption investigation into the Kabul Premier League. The board also revealed that they are currently probing ‘three other players’ for potential involvement in corrupt practices, and further decisions will be made once their guilt is confirmed.”

Janat, who represented the Shamshad Eagles in the 2024 Kabul Premier League, scored 72 runs in four innings at an average of 18 and a strike rate of 150. His team finished last in the six-team league table with just one win from five matches.

At the international level, Janat has featured in 15 ODIs, three Tests, and one T20I for Afghanistan, scoring 307 runs in ODIs and 110 runs in Tests. His last appearance for the national team was a T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare in June 2022.

Ihsanullah Janat comes from a family with a strong cricketing background, as his brother Nawroz Mangal was one of the stalwarts of the Afghan national team in their early years of international cricket.
