From Player to Coach: Cameron White Joins Melbourne Renegades
Former Australia white-ball captain Cameron White has been appointed as the new head coach of the Melbourne Renegades, signing a three-year deal to replace David Saker. White, who previously served as an assistant coach with the Sydney Sixers, is taking on his first head-coaching role and is tasked with guiding the Renegades back into contention in the Big Bash League (BBL).
White, a 40-year-old all-rounder, enjoyed a successful playing career, representing Australia 142 times across all three formats. He was best known for his contributions as a middle-order batter in the white-ball sides, captaining the T20I team six times and the ODI team once. White was also part of the Australia squad that won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2009.
Domestically, White had a prolific first-class career, amassing over 7,000 runs for Victoria and leading the state as their longest-serving Sheffield Shield captain. He was also a member of the Renegades’ only BBL championship-winning team in 2019.
“I’ve got so many great memories here as a player and achieving success, so to be back in Renegades colours several years later is a thrill,” White said. “The idea of working with this playing group – some really exciting players there, both young and experienced – is really exciting. I’m really looking forward to ripping in and starting my journey as coach.”
The Renegades’ roster includes white-ball run-machine Jake Fraser-McGurk, superstar spinners Adam Zampa and Nathan Lyon, and the recently acquired Josh Brown. White will be tasked with tapping into the team’s potential and guiding them back to the top of the BBL standings.
