Cricket Fans Brace for Weather Challenges at T20 World Cup Matches in Florida
As the T20 World Cup 2024 unfolds in Florida, a tropical disturbance has brought a rare flash flood emergency to much of southern Florida, including the Broward County region where the matches are scheduled to be played in Lauderhill.
Weather Impacts on Upcoming Matches
The weather is expected to play a significant role in the upcoming Group A matches, with the first fixture between Nepal and Sri Lanka already washed out. The forecast suggests heavy rain is likely to continue through the weekend, potentially impacting several more matches, including USA vs. Ireland, Canada vs. India, and Ireland vs. Pakistan.
According to the US National Weather Service (NWS), a “flood watch” remains in effect for the entire southern Florida area until Friday evening, with the potential for “heavy to excessive rainfall” and “locally considerable urban flooding.”
Group A Standings and Implications
While India has already secured their spot in the Super Eight stage after defeating the USA on Wednesday, the other teams in Group A โ USA, Canada, Ireland, and Pakistan โ are still vying for the remaining qualification spot. Pakistan, the 2022 T20 World Cup finalists, have won only one of their three games so far and will need to beat Ireland, while hoping the USA loses to them, in order to progress.
Impact on Group D
The washout on June 11 has also affected Group D, leaving Sri Lanka and Nepal on the brink of elimination. It’s worth noting that a minimum of five overs is required to constitute a match, and there are no reserve days for the group-stage fixtures. The first semi-final and the final have reserve days, but the second semi-final does not, as there is only a day’s gap between that match and the final.
