Ireland Captain Stirling Remains Optimistic Despite Defeat to Canada at T20 World Cup
Dublin, October 18th – Despite a disappointing 12-run loss to Canada in their second T20 World Cup match, Ireland captain Paul Stirling believes his side can still reach the Super 8 stage of the tournament. The defeat in New York has left Ireland on the brink of elimination, but Stirling is confident they can bounce back in their remaining two group games.
Canada posted 137-7 in their innings, with Nicholas Kirton’s 35-ball 49 the standout performance. Ireland’s bowler Barry McCarthy finished with figures of 2-24. In response, Ireland slumped to 59-6 before all-rounder Mark Adair’s 34 and George Dockrell’s unbeaten 30 took them close, but they ultimately fell short.
“There’s no reason we can’t go out and beat the USA and Pakistan, but we need to play a hell of a lot better if we want to do that,” said Stirling.
The Ireland captain acknowledged the need for his team to rediscover their best form, having emphasized the importance of consistent high-level performances throughout the past year.
Looking Ahead
Stirling is hopeful that the change in venue to Lauderhill, Florida, will work in Ireland’s favor. “We know the conditions there slightly better and we’ll be giving it as best a crack as we can,” he said.
With two must-win matches remaining, Stirling remains optimistic about Ireland’s chances of progressing to the Super 8 stage, provided they can recapture their top form. “We just want to play our best cricket for as long as we can,” he concluded.
