Rising Star Shoaib Bashir Joins Worcestershire on Short-Term Loan
Cricket enthusiasts are in for a treat as Shoaib Bashir, the rising England Test offspinner, has joined Worcestershire on a short-term loan. The 20-year-old sensation will be available for five Vitality Blast matches, starting with the clash against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road on Friday evening, and a crucial County Championship fixture against table-toppers Surrey.
Bashir’s breakthrough winter with Ben Stokes’ England team saw him claim 17 wickets in three appearances against India, including two five-wicket hauls. However, his limited playing time at his home county of Somerset had hindered his progress, with just 10 wickets in six matches since his professional debut in June 2023.
“We are delighted to have Shoaib Bashir join us on loan,” said Alan Richardson, Worcestershire’s head coach. “Shoaib is a player of immense talent and potential, and we believe his presence will significantly strengthen our squad for the Vitality Blast and our next Championship fixture against Surrey. The recent knee injury that sidelined Jack Leach’s involvement in the India tour allowed Bashir to showcase his skills as Somerset’s premier spinner in three County Championship matches in April. Despite taking only four wickets at 74.75 in the early-season conditions, Bashir has now been given a golden opportunity to prove his worth with Worcestershire.
Worcestershire currently sit fifth in the Blast North Group, tied on points with the teams above them, having recorded two wins and a loss in their first three games. In the County Championship, they are yet to secure a victory in their seven Division One matches, with their most recent fixture at New Road abandoned due to rain.
