Jofra Archer’s Homecoming: From Barbados to the Windward Cricket Club
Nestled just east of Bridgetown, past undulating sugar cane fields and the renowned Foursquare rum distillery, lies the rural parish of Saint Philip โ home to the Windward Cricket Club, one of the training bases for the ongoing T20 World Cup. This picturesque little ground, dating back to the 1970s, is just a stone’s throw away from Jofra Archer’s family home.
After a 14-month hiatus from international cricket, the 29-year-old England star is relishing his return to the field. Despite the disappointment of the rain-interrupted match against Scotland two days earlier, Archer found solace in the heartwarming support of local schoolchildren from his alma mater, Foundation, who filled the stands to witness his homecoming.
“I had a little bit of water in my eye and it wasn’t the rain,” Archer recounted, visibly moved by the prime minister’s personal invitation to her box and the presence of students from Chris Jordan’s former school, Combermere. “It felt unbelievable. I felt really supported.”
While fully fit since last November, Archer’s true test came during the recent comeback against Pakistan, where the “final 10% intensity” of international cricket proved the ultimate challenge. In the meantime, the fast bowler found solace in his beloved bulldogs and the companionship of his trained parrots, Jesse and James.
The Road Ahead
Naturally, all eyes are fixed on Saturday’s clash with Australia at the Kensington Oval, a fixture that evokes memories of Archer’s stellar debut Ashes series in 2019. However, the road ahead is primarily focused on white-ball cricket, with the Hundred, an Australia tour, and the Champions Trophy in 2025 taking precedence before a potential return to Test cricket.
As Archer puts it, “They’ve planned out almost everything. Probably the only thing they haven’t planned is the showers I take. I’m just glad to be back and hopefully back for a while.” Amen to that, as cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the return of this dynamic fast bowler.
