Gambhir Backs Rohit and Kohli Ahead of Crucial Australia Tour

Ahead of the highly anticipated five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has firmly stood by the senior batting duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. This series holds added significance for India’s chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final after their recent 3-0 loss to New Zealand at home.

Responding to questions about the duo’s recent form, Gambhir dismissed any concerns, stating, “> I have got no concerns whatever over Virat and Rohit. I think they are incredibly tough men. They’ve achieved a lot for Indian cricket, and they will continue to achieve a lot in the future as well.”

He emphasized that the hunger and passion in the dressing room remain crucial, which he believes are still very much present.

While Rohit managed 133 runs in ten innings against New Zealand and Bangladesh, averaging a mere 13.30, Kohli fared marginally better with 192 runs at an average of 21.33. The team’s first-ever 3-0 home series whitewash in 12 years has added to the discussions around the senior batters’ form.

Gambhir, however, remained unfazed by the transition talks surrounding the Indian Test team, stating, “> Look, honestly I’m not even thinking that the team is in transition and that kind of stuff.” He stressed that the upcoming five-Test series in Australia is the sole focus, and he has full confidence in the experienced players to guide the younger members of the squad.

The former cricketer acknowledged that India were “outplayed” by New Zealand but emphasized the team’s determination to bounce back and win the series in Australia. He believes the ten-day preparation period before the series will be crucial in getting the team ready to “fire from ball one.”
