Australian Allrounder Cameron Green Set to Undergo Back Surgery

Australian allrounder Cameron Green will undergo lower spine surgery, sidelining him for at least six months and ruling him out of the upcoming summer cricket season. This decision comes after Green was diagnosed with his fifth stress fracture in the lower back.

Following consultations with Cricket Australia’s medical staff, Green has opted to undergo a procedure that involves the insertion of screws and a titanium cable to stabilize the stress fracture and prevent future occurrences. This is a similar approach taken by several other cricketers, including Green’s Western Australia and club teammate Jason Behrendorff.

The recovery period for such a surgery typically ranges from nine to 12 months, but Cricket Australia is hopeful that Green will be able to return to action within six months, potentially making him available for the IPL, the World Test Championship final, and the tour of the Caribbean next year. However, his return to bowling will likely take longer.

Green’s injury history is a concern, as he has previously suffered four stress fractures in his lower back, dating back to his junior days. Despite the team’s efforts to manage his workload, the latest fracture has left the Cricket Australia medical staff puzzled.

The allrounder had a routine scan in August, which showed no issues, paving the way for his participation in the recent UK tour. During that series, Green bowled 21.2 overs across five T20Is and two ODIs, with his most intense workload being six overs in a match at Chester-le-Street.

The decision to undergo surgery is aimed at providing a long-term solution to Green’s recurring back problems, ensuring his availability for future international commitments, including the India tour, the Champions Trophy, and the Caribbean tour next year.
