100-ball Cricket Schedule: Leicestershire Finish Strong in Drawn East Midlands Clash
Leicestershire, 264/8 (Budinger 87, Trevaskis 57), vs Derbyshire
ECB Reporters Network, September 2022
After two days lost to the weather, the season-ending Vitality County Championship match between East Midlands neighbors Leicestershire and Derbyshire finally saw some action. With Derbyshire’s 17th Championship wooden spoon already confirmed, this contest held little at stake beyond local pride, although Leicestershire could overtake Northamptonshire to finish fourth in Division Two.
Leicestershire opener Sol Budinger starred with a career-best 87, while Liam Trevaskis contributed a crucial half-century. Derbyshire’s spinners, led by Mitch Wagstaff and captain David Lloyd, found success in the final session, with the latter picking up three wickets.
“Budinger’s natural ball-striking ability saw him race to 51 from just 40 deliveries. He reached his previous first-class best of 72 but fell 13 runs shy of a maiden century, spooning a catch back to bowler Luis Reece.”
Reece’s 200th wicket in all formats for Derbyshire made him the first player to achieve both 8,000 runs and 200 wickets for the county since Dominic Cork in the 1990s.
Trevaskis’ half-century helped Leicestershire surpass 200, but the visitors lost late wickets to Derbyshire’s spinners, with Wagstaff and Lloyd sharing five scalps between them.
With both teams having little to play for, a draw seemed inevitable, although a similar arrangement to the Glamorgan-Gloucestershire match, where an innings was forfeited, could facilitate a positive result.
