Cricket Enthusiasts Captivated as Essex Batters Dominate Vitality County Champions Surrey

Chelmsford, 28-Sep-2024 – In a captivating display of batting prowess, Essex’s cricketers Dean Elgar, Tom Westley, and Matt Critchley each scored a century, leading their side to a commanding 508 for 8 declared against Vitality County champions Surrey.

Elgar, the former South African captain, led the charge with a resilient 182, batting through five sessions despite struggling with a calf injury. He shared a record 253-run partnership with Westley, who blazed his way to 135 runs, including 25 boundaries and a solitary six.

“Undeterred by the weather disruptions that wiped out the first two days, the Essex batters took the game to the Surrey bowlers.”

Critchley then added to the misery, scoring a fluent 112 as Essex declared, leaving Surrey with a daunting target of 478 runs to chase.

Surrey, fresh off their title triumph, found the going tough, losing captain Rory Burns early in their reply, with off-spinner Simon Harmer striking the first blow. The visitors finished the day on 30 for 1, still trailing by a substantial margin.

Essex’s performance has put them in a strong position to finish third in the County Championship, ahead of Somerset, as they now need to bowl out Surrey twice on the final day to secure the necessary points.
