Cricket Enthusiast Barinder Sran Announces Retirement from International and Domestic Cricket

Barinder Sran, the left-arm fast bowler, has officially announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket. Sran, 31, represented India in six ODIs and two T20Is between January and June 2016, but had been out of the selection reckoning since then.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Sran expressed his gratitude for the incredible experiences cricket has provided him.

“As I officially hang up my cricket boots, I look back at my journey with a heart full of gratitude,” he wrote. “Cricket has gifted me innumerable and incredible experiences. Fast bowling soon became my lucky charm and opened doors to represent prestigious IPL franchises, ultimately culminating in the highest honor of representing India in 2016.”

Sran, the son of a farmer, discovered his passion for cricket after seeing a Kings XI Punjab advertisement calling for youngsters to participate in a trial. Prior to that, he had trained as a boxer at the Bhiwani Boxing Club in Haryana. Despite not securing an IPL contract initially, Sran’s talent and dedication led him to the Kings Cup, where he emerged as one of the top 35-40 uncapped cricketers in Punjab. In 2015, he was picked up by the Rajasthan Royals at the IPL auction, and a year later, he made his ODI debut for India under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, taking 3 for 56 in Perth.

Sran’s international career was brief, but he cherished the memories created during his time with the national team.

“Even though my international career was brief, the memories created will be forever cherished. I am eternally grateful to the almighty for getting me the right coaches and management, who have supported me throughout my journey.”

Over the course of his career, Sran played:

    • 18 first-class matches
    • 31 List-A matches
    • 48 T20 matches

He represented various IPL franchises, including Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Mumbai Indians, and was also a net bowler for Gujarat Titans. His last competitive match was in February 2021, when he played for Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Madhya Pradesh.
