Cricket Prodigy Shivam Mavi Battles Injury Setbacks, Determined to Reclaim Pace and Potential

Shivam Mavi, the promising pace sensation from India’s victorious 2018 Under-19 World Cup team, has faced a frustrating battle with injuries that have halted his promising career. Despite the setbacks, the 25-year-old remains steadfast in his determination to regain his blistering pace and secure a spot in the senior Indian team.

Mavi’s Promising Start and Injury Woes

Mavi, who was part of a talented batch that included the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, and Arshdeep Singh, was India’s pace spearhead during the U-19 triumph. He picked up 9 wickets in six matches, emerging as one of the breakout stars from that tournament. The belief was that Mavi’s path to the Indian team was only a matter of time.

However, fate had other plans. Mavi has since endured a string of injuries, including four stress fractures in his back, that have severely limited his game-time. After being snapped up by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹6.4 crore during the 2023 IPL auction, the young pacer was forced to miss the entire tournament due to his persistent injury woes.

“Rehab is repetitive. But after so many injuries, I have made peace with it. The thing that irritates me most is not being able to get the rhythm back,” Mavi revealed in an interview with The Indian Express.

    Determination to Maintain Pace

Despite the challenges, Mavi remains unwavering in his commitment to maintain his pace, a crucial attribute that earned him his maiden India call-up in January 2023. The young speedster has sought guidance from experienced Indian seamers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, who have navigated similar injury concerns.

“Pace gave me the recognition. If you are bowling below 140 kilometres per hour, it becomes easier for the batsmen. I have tried to stick to that pace. To hit 140 after an injury is difficult till you find that rhythm,” Mavi explained.

    Mavi’s Comeback Efforts

Now, the Kashi Rudras player is finally back on the field, representing his state in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League, as he aims to regain his rhythm and fitness. With a steely determination to overcome his injury woes, Mavi is hopeful of making a strong comeback and fulfilling his potential on the international stage.
