Backyard Cricket Enthusiasts Witness Thrilling Match at Chester le Street

    Nottinghamshire 229 (James 56, McCann 51, Wagner 4-68) and 212 for 6 (Haynes 59*, Slater 53, Hogg 3-40) trail Durham 531 for 7 dec (Turner 114*, de Leede 79) by 90 runs

Cricket enthusiasts gathered at the Chester le Street Cricket Ground for a captivating match between Nottinghamshire and Durham in the Vitality County Championship. Despite some gritty resistance from the visitors, Durham edged closer to victory on the third day of the contest.

“Debutant seamer Daniel Hogg stood out for the hosts, taking four crucial wickets across the day’s play.”

Nottinghamshire, who were asked to follow on after conceding a massive 302-run first-innings lead, struggled to find their footing, with Hogg’s impressive bowling reducing them to 99 for 4.

However, a determined partnership between Matt Montgomery and Jack Haynes defied the Durham bowlers for over 50 overs, frustrating the hosts’ push for victory. Haynes, in particular, played a gritty knock, scoring an unbeaten 59 as Nottinghamshire finished the day on 212 for 6, still trailing by 90 runs.

    Earlier in the Day

Nottinghamshire’s first-innings woes continued as they lost their remaining two wickets quickly, adding just nine runs to their overnight total. Durham then enforced the follow-on, and their decision was initially rewarded as Hogg dismissed the dangerous Haseeb Hameed.

The visitors’ opening pair of Ben Slater and Hameed had started well, putting on a 52-run stand, but Hogg’s incisive bowling and some sharp fielding from the hosts eventually took their toll. Slater, who had earlier crossed the 8,000-run milestone in first-class cricket, played a gritty knock of 53 before being run out in a mix-up with Haynes.

As the day drew to a close, Nottinghamshire’s lower order continued to frustrate Durham, with Haynes and Montgomery stitching together a resolute partnership. The visitors will be hoping to carry this momentum into the fourth day, as they look to salvage a draw or even pull off an unlikely victory.
