Ireland’s Cricket Squad Gears Up for T20 World Cup Debutants Canada and USA
Ireland’s Stirling-led squad will face T20 World Cup debutants Canada in New York on June 7th, followed by a clash against the USA a week later in Florida. Stirling expressed his excitement, stating, “I never thought I’d play cricket in New York, but I’m really looking forward to it, and the whole team shares that excitement.”
The Irish will conclude their campaign against Pakistan on June 16th, in what could be a crucial match for second place behind group leaders India. Pakistan recently defeated Ireland 2-1 in a T20 series in Clontarf and sit four places higher in the rankings. While Canada and USA may be considered underdogs, the Americans hold home advantage and secured a historic series win over Bangladesh last month.
“We’re facing four strong teams, not just two. The India game will be the toughest, so we aim to put in a strong performance. But we also have two crucial matches against the USA and Canada coming up.”
Stirling acknowledged the challenges ahead, but the Ireland captain remained optimistic about their chances, adding:
“If we reach the stage where we’re playing Pakistan in a ‘winner-takes-all’ scenario, we’d probably be happy. But we can’t look too far ahead – the USA’s win over Bangladesh shows we need to be at our best to beat them.”
