Ollie Pope Confirmed as England Captain for Three-Match Test Series Against Sri Lanka
In a significant development, Ollie Pope has been appointed as the England men’s Test captain for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka, following the unfortunate injury to regular skipper Ben Stokes.
Stokes, who has been leading the English Test team with distinction, sustained a torn left hamstring while playing in the Hundred for his side Northern Superchargers on Sunday. The scan on Tuesday revealed the extent of the damage, ruling Stokes out of the entire Sri Lanka series, which is set to commence in Manchester on August 21.
With Stokes sidelined, the 25-year-old Pope, who has been Stokes’ deputy for over a year, will now assume full captaincy duties for the three-match Test contest. Pope, who was subsequently withdrawn from London Spirit’s Hundred squad, will be aiming to make the most of this opportunity to showcase his leadership skills.
“The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has decided against naming a replacement for the injured Stokes in the squad to face Sri Lanka.”
In his absence, the likes of Jordan Cox could be in contention to make their Test debuts as a specialist batter at number six, or England could opt to reconfigure their team balance by promoting Jamie Smith and Chris Woakes up the order.
Pope, who has predominantly batted at number three for England, has largely been a success in that position, averaging 44.63 with five centuries. His captaincy experience, though limited to a single first-class match for Surrey and a few warm-up games for England, will be put to the test as he leads the team in the absence of the talismanic Stokes.
The ECB has stated that Stokes is targeting a return for England’s winter Test tour of Pakistan, which is set to commence in Multan on October 7. Similarly, Zak Crawley, who is also unavailable for the Sri Lanka series due to a finger injury, is aiming to make his comeback during the Pakistan tour.
