Invincibles Secure Knockout Berth with Dominant Win over Spirit
Chester-le-Street, August 11, 2024 – Oval Invincibles have booked their place in the knockout rounds of The Hundred after a commanding nine-wicket victory over London Spirit at The Kia Oval.
Jordan Cox’s unbeaten 61 off 30 balls led the Invincibles’ chase as they comfortably chased down Spirit’s modest total of 96 with 37 balls to spare. The result means Invincibles have now won six of their seven matches and are guaranteed a top-three finish in the men’s competition.
Electing to bowl first, Invincibles quickly put the pressure on Spirit, with Adam Zampa’s impressive 4 for 17 restricting the visitors to a below-par score. Michael Pepper provided some early resistance with a 27-ball 27, but the rest of the Spirit lineup struggled to make an impact as they were dismissed for just 96.
“We’ve been playing really good cricket throughout. Today we knew how important it was to get the win. Finishing first and hopefully going straight through to Lord’s, we’ve potentially made it really tough for anyone to overtake us from here,” said Zampa.
In the run chase, Invincibles openers Jason Roy and Cox made light work of the target, with Cox leading the way with a flurry of boundaries. Ollie Stone’s lone wicket for Spirit was the only blemish on an otherwise dominant display from the home side.
The win sets up a crucial final group stage match against Trent Rockets on Wednesday, where Invincibles will be looking to secure a direct path to the final by finishing top of the table. Zampa, who was named the Meerkat Match Hero, was delighted with his team’s performance and the opportunity to progress straight to Lord’s.
With the 100-ball cricket live action at Chester-le-Street in full swing, the Invincibles will be hoping to carry this form into their crucial encounter with Trent Rockets and secure a place in the grand final at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
