Oval Invincibles Triumph Over London Spirit in Thrilling The Hundred Clash
Cricket enthusiasts were treated to an enthralling encounter as Oval Invincibles maintained their push for top spot in The Hundred, courtesy of an impressive eight-wicket win over London Spirit at the Kia Oval.
In front of a packed house of 14,721 fans, Invincibles captain Lauren Winfield-Hill starred with a vital half-century, guiding her side to a comfortable chase of 120. Winfield-Hill’s 61 off just 40 balls, combined with a crucial unbeaten 30 from Marizanne Kapp, proved too much for the visitors.
Sharma’s Heroics in Vain
Earlier, it was Deepti Sharma’s heroic 46* that helped London Spirit post a respectable total of 120/8, after Invincibles had reduced them to a precarious 47/7. Sharma’s record eighth-wicket partnership with Eva Gray gave the Spirit a glimmer of hope, but Winfield-Hill and Kapp ensured the hosts cantered to victory with nine balls to spare.
“It’s a great feeling. I was due so it’s really nice to contribute, especially at the business end. I’m really pleased to get another good performance and another win.”
- Lauren Winfield-Hill, Oval Invincibles Captain
Playoff Implications
The win keeps Oval Invincibles firmly in contention for a top spot finish, while the result has effectively ended Manchester Originals’ tournament. For London Spirit, the defeat means they must win their final game and hope other results go their way to secure a place in the top three.
Winfield-Hill also praised the pitch conditions, which she felt played into her hands.
