Nayar Reflects on India’s Batting Woes in ODI Loss to Sri Lanka

Spin-Friendly Conditions Pose Challenges for Indian Batters

On August 5th, 2024, India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar discussed the team’s misfiring batting performance in the second ODI against Sri Lanka, which the visitors lost by 32 runs. Despite the surprise defeat, Nayar praised the impact of Sri Lankan spinner Jeffrey Vandersay and the tenacity of the home team’s lower-order batters.

Nayar acknowledged that the spin-friendly conditions were a key factor, stating, “In these conditions, the game can turn on its head because there is so much spin on offer.” He noted that India’s batters initially found it easier to score against the new ball, but the pitch increasingly aided the spinners as the game progressed.

The assistant coach pointed to Vandersay’s masterful lengths and the tight lines he bowled, which pinned the Indian batters in the crease and led to the loss of six wickets between overs 14 and 24. “Vandersay bowled the ideal length in these conditions,” Nayar said, crediting the Sri Lankan spinner’s effective use of flight and turn.

“When you are batting first, there is less pressure,” Nayar observed, acknowledging the advantage the home team had in setting the target.

Additionally, Nayar highlighted the resilient lower-order batting performances from Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis, which helped Sri Lanka post a challenging total of 240/9.

    Defending the Team’s Batting Approach

Regarding India’s decision to tinker with the batting order, Nayar maintained that the thought process was sound, prioritizing a left-right combination to counter Sri Lanka’s spin threat. He defended the team’s approach, stating, “If a middle-order batter bats as a middle-order batter, it is the right decision.

As the Indian team looks to bounce back in the series, Nayar emphasized the need to analyze and rectify the issues that have led to consecutive defeats in the 100-ball cricket live matches against the determined Sri Lankans.
