Jonny Bairstow Unfazed by Batting Position as England Defend T20 World Cup Title

Batting Position Doesn’t Matter

Despite finding himself back at number four in the preferred line-up of captain Jos Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott, Bairstow remains unfazed. “I’ve batted all over. It doesn’t really matter to me where I bat. It’s actually a compliment that Jos and Motty think I’ve got the skillset to bat at four,” he said.

The 34-year-old Yorkshireman has proven his versatility, with statistics suggesting that England are better equipped when he comes in at number four in T20 internationals. His average of 34.07 in the 20 innings where he has walked in with two wickets down is superior to his opening average of 29.7.

Bairstow’s return to the England setup comes after a challenging period that included a freak golfing accident in September 2022, which led to extensive leg surgery. His surgeon described the operation as “putting Humpty Dumpty back together,” but Bairstow is determined to make the most of his second chance.

“Look, I missed out with an injury. It’s part and parcel of life,” Bairstow said matter-of-factly. “But yeah, I want to be a part of winning another World Cup for England.”
