Defending Women’s Caribbean Premier League Champions Bolster Lineup with Sri Lankan Superstar and Australian Wicketkeeper-Batter

Barbados Royals, the reigning Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) champions, have made several key additions to their roster for the 2024 season. The team has retained last year’s captain, Hayley Matthews, and legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington, while also adding Sri Lankan superstar Chamari Athapaththu and Australian wicketkeeper-batter Georgia Redmayne to their lineup.

Athapaththu, a prolific top-order batter and off-spinner, has been in exceptional form this year, scoring 371 runs in 12 T20Is, including a century against Scotland. She has also picked up 13 wickets with a best of 4 for 29 against the West Indies.

In addition to Athapaththu and Redmayne, the Royals have also brought back Laura Harris, Chinelle Henry, Afy Fletcher, Aaliyah Alleyne, and Qiana Joseph from their 2023 squad. Matthews, who captained the team to victory last season, finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the competition with 191 runs at a strike rate of 132.63. She also contributed with the ball, taking seven wickets at an economy rate of 7.44.

“We are thrilled to have Chamari and Georgia join our team. Their skill and experience will be invaluable as we look to defend our title,” said Hayley Matthews, the Barbados Royals captain.

Wellington, on the other hand, was the second-highest wicket-taker in the 2023 WCPL with eight wickets in five games at an economy of 4.80.

The 2024 WCPL will be held in Trinidad from August 21 to 29, with the Brian Lara Cricket Academy hosting all seven games. Trinbago Knight Riders, Guyana Amazon Warriors, and the Barbados Royals will be the three teams competing for the title.
