Cricket Enthusiasts Eagerly Await England’s New-Look Line-up for West Indies Test
England’s squad for the first Test against West Indies at Lord’s has been revealed, and it includes several exciting debutants and returning faces. The home team will hand debuts to the Surrey duo of Gus Atkinson and Jamie Smith, as they aim to usher in a new era in the longest format.
Atkinson, who has impressed in white-ball cricket for England, will be making his Test debut after a breakthrough 2023 season in the County Championship. The pace bowler has been clocked at speeds in the late 80s and early 90s mph, and his selection highlights England’s search for long-term pace options.
Joining Atkinson in the XI is Jamie Smith, who will don the wicketkeeping gloves as England move beyond the duo of Ben Foakes and Jonny Bairstow. The 23-year-old has been in excellent form across all formats, and his maiden call-up comes on the back of a strong start to the season, where he has scored 677 runs in the County Championship at an impressive average of 56.41.
The return of Chris Woakes to the XI is another notable inclusion, as the all-rounder makes his first Test appearance since being named player of the series in last summer’s Ashes. Wo’s all-round abilities will bolster England’s balance, particularly with the impending retirement of veteran seamer James Anderson.
Offspinner Earns Home Debut
Offspinner Shoaib Bashir also earns a home debut, having impressed in India earlier this year. His selection ahead of Jack Leach showcases England’s faith in the 27-year-old, who has been given the opportunity to establish himself in the side.
The experienced core of Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes remains, with Harry Brook returning to the No. 5 position after missing the India series.
