Concussions and Injuries Plague India-South Africa T20I Clash
The first T20I between India and South Africa in Chennai on Friday witnessed multiple player injuries, with both teams unable to field their full-strength squads.
Wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh suffered a concussion after taking a blow to the face while attempting a catch in the 16th over. The 20-year-old, playing her 50th T20I, was forced to leave the field, with uncapped Uma Chetry temporarily replacing her behind the stumps. At the start of the second innings, batter S Sajana was announced as the official concussion substitute for Ghosh.
“Injuries are a part of the game, but it’s always worrying to see players go down, especially with concussions. We’ll have to assess the situation and see how the injured players are doing.”
South Africa’s Tazmin Brits also succumbed to an injury, sustaining a contusion in her right lower leg. Brits had to be stretchered off the field after scoring a 56-ball 81 to power the visitors to 189/4 in the first innings. Masbata Klaas came on as a substitute fielder in her place.
Despite the setbacks, the match proceeded, with South Africa ultimately securing a 12-run victory to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The injured players’ participation in the remaining fixtures remains uncertain.
