Cricket: England Secure ODI Series Whitewash Against New Zealand
Bristol, September 18 – In a rain-affected encounter at the Bristol County Ground, England clinched a series whitewash over New Zealand in their one-day international series, winning the final match by five wickets.
Despite the match being reduced to 42 overs per side due to a 95-minute rain delay, New Zealand managed to post their highest total of the series โ 211 for 8. However, it was England’s young pace sensation Lauren Bell who stole the show, recording her maiden international five-wicket haul.
Bell’s interventions proved crucial as she removed the in-form Sophie Devine, half-centurion Amelia Kerr, and the left-handed Brooke Halliday, cutting short promising innings. England then chased down the target with five wickets to spare, thanks to half-centuries from Amy Jones and the unbeaten Nat Sciver-Brunt, who was given a life by the New Zealand fielders on 63.
“I’m really pleased with the way the team has played throughout the series. The young players have stepped up and shown their potential, and that’s exactly what we want to see as we build towards the future.”
Though England’s batting displayed a few early wobbles, the all-round performance, including sharp fielding from Jones and Charlie Dean, helped them secure the series whitewash. The young seamer Bell, who has been experimenting with her away-swing deliveries, returned to her best with a match-winning spell, relying on her trusted in-swing and slower balls.
With the series victory, England demonstrated their depth and resilience, even in the absence of their regular match-winner Sophie Ecclestone. The result will provide a confidence boost as they continue their preparations for the upcoming 100-ball cricket schedule, backyard cricket, beach cricket, and club cricket engagements.
