England’s Bold Shift in Test Squad
England’s long build-up to the 2025-26 Ashes begins this month with a revamped Test squad that marks a clear departure from the initial phase of the Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes “Bazball” project. The announcement of a 14-man squad for the first two Tests against West Indies, commencing at Lord’s on July 10, confirms the end of Jonny Bairstow’s 100-Test career and potentially his entire England tenure.
Changing of the Guard behind the Stumps
The decision to hand the gloves to debutant Jamie Smith is a setback for Bairstow’s Surrey teammate Ben Foakes, who at 31 may struggle to add to his 25 caps despite his impressive wicket-keeping abilities. The long-standing Bairstow-Foakes debate has now been resolved.
Significant Omissions
Other squad members who were part of the 4-1 defeat in India have been omitted, including spinners Jack Leach, Tom Hartley and Rehan Ahmed, and seamers Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson. Only Wood can be confident of featuring in the future, with a three-year central contract signed last year to protect him until the Ashes tour of Australia.
Farewell to a Legend
The break from the past will be further accentuated when James Anderson retires from Test cricket after the Lord’s Test. McCullum and Stokes have initiated the extensive preparation for the 2025-26 Ashes.
Infusion of New Talent
In their place, the selectors have turned to fast-bowling inexperienced talents. Surrey’s 26-year-old Gus Atkinson, with only 19 first-class matches under his belt, is in line for a Test debut, as England seek to add aggression to his pace and ability. The selection of the 6ft 5in uncapped Nottinghamshire seamer Dillon Pennington, aged 25, is also an acknowledgement of his progress since leaving Worcestershire.
Matthew Potts, who last played a Test a year ago, has also earned a recall, while the spin-bowling duties will be handled by the 20-year-old Shoaib Bashir, who impressed during his maiden Test series in India.
“With Stokes now fit to bowl again after successful knee surgery, and both Chris Woakes and Anderson set to feature at Lord’s, England may opt to field four seamers and give Bashir a game against West Indies.”
Aggressive Batting Reinforcement
Surrey’s Dan Lawrence, last seen in Test cricket in March 2022, has been included as the spare batsman, valued by Stokes for his aggressive approach.
Bairstow’s Uncertain Future
For Jonny Bairstow, a long and eventful England career across all three formats may have reached its conclusion. At 35 in September, and having lost mobility since his devastating 2022 golf course ankle injury, it is hard to envision him featuring in England’s future white-ball plans, which will focus on the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the 2026 T20 World Cup in India.
