England’s T20 World Cup Campaign Ends in Semifinal Defeat to Dominant India
On Saturday, England’s defense of the T20 World Cup title came to an abrupt end as they suffered a comprehensive 68-run loss against a formidable India team in the semifinal clash held in Guyana.
Set a challenging target of 172 runs on a difficult pitch, England’s batters failed to find their rhythm and were dismissed for just 103 runs in 16.4 overs. Captain Jos Buttler got the team off to a solid start with 23 runs, but his dismissal sparked a collapse, with Phil Salt (5), Jonny Bairstow (duck), and Moeen Ali (8) quickly following suit.
“The relentless Indian bowling attack, led by the impressive Kuldeep Yadav (3-19), continued to put pressure on the English batters, and when Kuldeep bowled Harry Brook for 25, the game was effectively over for Buttler’s side, despite two late run-outs.”
Earlier, India had posted a competitive total of 171-7, thanks to a fine partnership of 73 runs off 50 balls between Rohit Sharma (57) and Suryakumar Yadav (47), who overcame the challenging pitch conditions.
With this victory, India, who have not won a World Cup in 13 years, will now face the first-time finalists South Africa in the title clash in Barbados. England, on the other hand, will return home on Friday and shift their focus to a three-match Test series against West Indies, starting on July 10.
