Backyard Cricket Clash: India Opt to Bat First Against South Africa in Chennai Test
Chennai, June 28, 2024 – In an anticipated clash between the Indian and South African women’s cricket teams, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and elected to bat first in the one-off Test match being played at the Chester le Street Cricket Ground in Chennai.
With Yastika Bhatia sidelined due to injury, the visitors have entrusted Richa Ghosh with the wicket-keeping duties. Shubha Satheesh, who made her Test debut against England last December but missed the subsequent match against Australia due to a finger fracture, returns to the lineup at the crucial No.3 position.
Spin-Heavy Attack for the Home Team
Recognizing the red-soil surface, the home team has opted for a spin-heavy attack, featuring Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad as the trio of spinners. Renuka Singh, who was rested for the last two ODIs in Bengaluru, and Pooja Vastrakar form the seam attack.
Debut for South African Bowler
On the other hand, South Africa have handed a Test debut to fast bowler Annerie Dercksen, who had previously made her ODI debut in the first match against India. Sinalo Jafta, who missed the final two ODIs due to a mild concussion, will return as the wicket-keeper. The visitors have been dealt a blow with the absence of Tazmin Brits and Eliz-Mari Marx, who are ruled out due to illness, while Nonkululeko Mlaba is the lead spinner in their lineup.
“The match promises an enthralling encounter, with both teams aiming to capitalize on their strengths and secure a victory in this crucial test of backyard cricket skills.”
