Cricket Fans Gear Up for Thrilling LPL 2024 with New ‘Power-Blast Overs’

Colombo, June 27, 2024 – The upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 season is set to introduce an exciting new feature that is sure to captivate cricket enthusiasts. Matches during the tournament will feature two additional powerplay overs at the death, known as the “power-blast overs“.

The 16th and 17th overs of each completed innings will have a maximum of four fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle, in contrast to the usual two fielders during the first six overs. This new rule aims to create a more aggressive and thrilling phase of the game, as per the LPL statement.

“We decided to bring this innovation in order to create further excitement for the league, which is growing year by year,” said Samantha Dodanwela, the LPL’s tournament director. “This new introduction is sure to generate a lot of excitement among the fans, and the teams will need to strategise effectively to make the most of this period.”

Outside of these two power-blast overs, the standard five-fielder restriction will apply, as per normal playing conditions.

The 2024 edition of the LPL will comprise 20 league matches between five franchises, followed by three playoff matches and the final. Each team will face each other twice during the league stage, with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs.

One of the notable changes in the upcoming season is the introduction of the new Dambulla Sixers franchise, after Sri Lanka Cricket was forced to terminate the previous franchise due to one of the co-owner’s arrest under the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports Act.

Cricket enthusiasts can look forward to an electrifying LPL 2024 season, with the addition of the power-blast overs promising to deliver a more aggressive and thrilling brand of cricket. Teams will need to adapt their strategies to make the most of this new rule change and provide fans with an unforgettable cricketing experience.
