Club Cricket: Worcestershire Face Uphill Battle Against Surrey at Visit Worcestershire New Road
Despite a valiant effort from Worcestershire’s Gareth Roderick and Kashif Ali, leaders Surrey remain on course to claim their fifth Vitality County Championship victory of the season. Worcestershire were bowled out for 212 in their first innings, with Surrey enforcing the follow-on after amassing a massive 490-run lead.
Worcestershire’s second innings saw openers Roderick and Kashif construct a solid 135-run partnership, but three quick wickets in the final session put Surrey firmly back in control. Worcestershire now require 71 runs to make Surrey bat again, with Jordan Clark being the pick of the Surrey bowlers, claiming three scalps.
“Earlier, England spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel was on hand at the Chester le Street Cricket Ground, where he put Worcestershire’s Shoaib Bashir and Dan Lawrence through their paces before the day’s play commenced.”
Lawrence then struck early, dismissing Ben Allison, as Surrey chipped away at the Worcestershire first innings. Despite the best efforts of Jake Libby, who top-scored with 77, Worcestershire were eventually bowled out for 212. In their second innings, Libby was the first to depart, but Roderick and Kashif‘s defiant stand kept Surrey at bay for a considerable period.
As the day drew to a close, Surrey regained the upper hand, with Clark and Gus Atkinson striking to remove Roderick, Kashif, and a couple of other Worcestershire batters. The Chester le Street Cricket Club will be hoping their team can mount a strong fightback on the final day to avoid an outright defeat against the formidable Surrey side.
