Rohit Sharma Unlikely to Play for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 (AFP)

According to former India opener Aakash Chopra, Rohit Sharma may have played his last match for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Chopra’s assessment comes after the tumultuous events that unfolded at the five-time IPL champions during the season.

Rohit Sharma, who was sacked as the MI captain at the start of IPL 2024, scored a half-century in the team’s final match of the season. However, the change in captaincy, with Hardik Pandya taking over the reins, reportedly created a divided dressing room atmosphere within the franchise.

“I think Rohit Sharma has played his last match for the Mumbai Indians, whether he doesn’t want to be retained or the franchise lets him go.” – Aakash Chopra

Despite Rohit’s decent individual performance, scoring 417 runs at an average of 32.07 and a strike rate of 150, including a century and a fifty, MI finished at the bottom of the points table under his leadership.

Chopra believes that the franchise will make some significant decisions for the next season, and Rohit’s future with the team is uncertain. The former India opener also suggested that MI might not retain Ishan Kishan, who was their most expensive player at ₹15.5 crore, citing the high price tag.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has already joined the Indian national team’s preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup in New York. The team will start their campaign on June 5 against Ireland, with the highly anticipated clash against Pakistan scheduled for June 9.
