England Captain Shines as Western Storm Seal 11-Run Victory
Western Storm 142/7 (Knight 66, Corney 46, Munro 4-23) beat Sunrisers 131/9 (Grewcock 40) by 11 runs
England captain Heather Knight continued her impressive form, scoring a second consecutive half-century to guide Western Storm to an 11-run victory over Sunrisers in the Charlotte Edwards Cup.
Knight, who had struggled during the recent Pakistan T20I series, found her rhythm with a well-constructed 66 off just 34 balls. Her partnership of 74 with the in-form 20-year-old Emma Corney (46) set the platform for Storm’s eventual total of 142/7.
“Her clean ball-striking included a towering six, as she continued her rich vein of form ahead of the upcoming series against New Zealand.”
Despite a blistering start from Grace Scrivens and Jo Gardner, Sunrisers fell short in their chase, ending on 131/9. Blaze loanee Sophie Munro was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 4/23 to condemn Sunrisers to the bottom of the table for the fourth consecutive year.
Batting first, Storm utilized Corney’s ability to rotate the strike, allowing Knight to play her natural game and score freely. The England skipper’s clean ball-striking included a towering six, as she continued her rich vein of form ahead of the upcoming series against New Zealand.
Sunrisers made a promising start to their pursuit, but the dismissals of Scrivens and Gardner in quick succession triggered a middle-order collapse. Jodi Grewcock’s gutsy 40 was not enough to prevent Storm from securing their second win of the competition.
This victory puts Storm a point and a place better off than their opponents, as the focus now turns to the highly anticipated showdown between England and New Zealand starting next Wednesday.
