Cricket Clash: Afghanistan Opt to Chase Against Resilient West Indies
In the final group game of the men’s T20 World Cup 2024, Rashid Khan’s Afghanistan won the toss and chose to chase against the West Indies at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St. Lucia.
While Afghanistan remained unchanged, the West Indies made a couple of adjustments to their lineup. Romario Shepherd had to return home for the birth of his second child, paving the way for Obed McCoy to earn a spot in the XI. Shai Hope also replaced Roston Chase, adding more batting depth to the West Indies’ arsenal.
The weather could play a significant role in the match, with forecasts indicating winds exceeding 20 kmph, which could impact the teams’ strategies.
Rashid Khan’s decision to chase was influenced by his desire to get his team accustomed to the task, as they had only done so once in the competition, against Papua New Guinea.
The teams:
- West Indies: Brandon King, Johnson Charles, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Shai Hope, Rovman Powell (capt), Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Obed McCoy
- Afghanistan: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Karim Janat, Rashid Khan (capt), Noor Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi
