Cricket Fans Disappointed by Wet Weather Disruptions at T20 World Cup in Florida
The T20 World Cup has been a grand success overall, with 20 teams competing and several thrilling matches. Afghanistan and co-hosts USA have even made it through to the Super Eight stage. However, the event organizers have faced criticism for the poor ground conditions that have led to significant delays and disruptions due to wet weather in Florida.
Despite less than 30 minutes of serious rain over the first two days, no play was possible on Friday or Saturday at the Central Broward Regional Park Turf Ground. Sunday’s matches also looked doubtful as one part of the outfield remained soft underfoot.
“This has left teams, particularly Pakistan and India, frustrated at the loss of crucial match time. India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour expressed disappointment, saying the team was eager to play and move past the challenging conditions they faced in New York. Pakistan’s Imad Wasim also called on the ICC to review the situation, noting that fully covering the entire playing surface is the norm at other venues.”
The issues highlight the ICC’s vulnerability to criticism, despite their efforts to bring the World Cup to a new market. The stadium in Dallas, run by Major League Cricket, demonstrated better preparedness, with play going ahead despite the heavy rains. In contrast, the Broward County-run facility in Lauderhill appears to have fallen short, lacking sufficient drainage and cover systems.
While the extreme weather conditions in Florida cannot be ignored, the organizers’ inability to ensure uninterrupted play has left cricket enthusiasts and the ICC’s commercial partners dismayed. As the T20 World Cup continues, the governing body will need to reflect on this experience and ensure better ground preparation for future events, especially when venturing into new territories.
