Sri Lanka Women Secure Convincing Victory Over West Indies Women in Hambantota Thriller

On June 15, 2024, the Sri Lanka Women’s cricket team ended their six-match ODI losing streak against the West Indies Women, claiming a dominant six-wicket victory in the first match of their three-game series in Hambantota.

Opting to bat first, the visitors made a strong start, reaching 75 for 1 thanks to a 68-run second-wicket partnership between Hayley Matthews and Shemaine Campbelle. However, the Sri Lankan spinners, led by the impressive trio of Sugandika Kumari, Kavisha Dilhari, and Inoka Ranaweera, turned the tide, dismissing the West Indies for 195 despite Matthews’ 38 and Stafanie Taylor’s 33.

In their chase, the home team’s top order stepped up, with four batters scoring over 35 runs. Captain Chamari Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne provided a solid foundation, putting on 88 for the opening wicket in 13.2 overs. Although Sri Lanka briefly stumbled, losing three quick wickets, they ultimately coasted to victory with 95 balls to spare, securing a 1-0 lead in the series.

“This result marked Sri Lanka Women’s first ODI win over the West Indies since 2015, ending a six-match losing streak against their Caribbean counterparts. The hosts will look to carry this momentum into the remaining two matches of the series as they continue their quest for international success.”
