Cricket Enthusiasts Rejoice: PCB Unveils Plans for New Domestic Tournaments

In a bid to bridge the gap between domestic and international cricket, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has unveiled plans to introduce three new domestic tournaments – one for each format – starting from the next season.

    The Pentangular Tournaments

The five-team “Pentangular” tournaments will feature the top 150 players in the country, providing an elite layer of competition where the nation’s best cricketers will face off against each other. These new events will be in addition to the existing tournaments in each format, such as the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, National One-Day Cup, and National T20 Cup.

According to PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, the decision to launch these tournaments was prompted by an internal research conducted by the board, which highlighted the significant quality gap between domestic and international cricket in Pakistan.

The Pentangular tournaments will not be franchised, but rather owned and operated by the PCB. The five teams will be newly created entities with their own management and coaching setups, and the selection process will involve a combination of PCB’s selection committee and team managements.

    Benefits and Challenges

One of the key benefits envisioned by the PCB is the opportunity for the country’s top players to engage in more first-class matches, even during the off-season between the end of the domestic season and the international commitments.

However, the integration of these new tournaments into an already packed domestic calendar poses a challenge, with the PCB needing to address the availability of stadiums and the potential expansion of the overall season.

Despite these hurdles, the introduction of the Pentangular tournaments represents the PCB’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the foundation of domestic cricket in Pakistan and provide the national team with a more robust pool of talent.
